Dawson | Joey
In Dawson's Creek, relationships are at the center of the plot, and none is as central as the one between Dawson Leery and Joey Potter. Their story begins as a childhood friendship that slowly develops into something more—at least for Dawson, who begins to idealize Joey. For him, she is often less of a flesh-and-blood person and more of a projection of his romantic ideals. Although they grow closer several times, their relationship repeatedly fails due to bad timing, expectations, and an inability to truly meet each other on equal footing. Their connection is deep – but rooted more in the past, familiarity, and a desire for stability than in genuine romantic chemistry.
Joey | Pacey
Joey's relationship with Pacey Witter is completely different, developing over several seasons from antipathy to intense love. Their connection begins with friction – they tease each other, rub each other up the wrong way – but it is precisely this that gives rise to a deep affection. Pacey sees Joey in a way she needs to be seen: not as “the girl next door,” but as an independent, strong, yet vulnerable person. The two experience both passionate and painful moments—such as when Pacey feels increasingly inadequate next to Joey's ambitions—but their love remains authentic. For many fans, this relationship is considered the true heart of the series.
Andie | Pacey
Before Joey, Pacey had a very formative relationship with Andie McPhee, who was his first serious love. Andie is ambitious, smart, and brings structure to Pacey's previously chaotic life. She believes in him, which is a completely new experience for Pacey – and precisely why it is so meaningful. But this relationship is not without its conflicts: Andie's mental illness puts both of them to the test, and the couple eventually breaks up. It's a bittersweet love story that helps Pacey mature, but it can't last.
Dawson | Jen
Their relationship is actually the starting point of the entire series – Jen moves to Capeside, and Dawson falls in love with her immediately. At first, she seems like the ‘girl from the big city,’ mysterious, mature, a little rebellious – which fascinates Dawson, but also overwhelms him. They start a relationship, but it quickly becomes clear that Jen is carrying emotional baggage, while Dawson is looking for a romantic, ideal love like in his favourite films. Jen cannot and will not fulfil this dream.
Later, especially in season 5, there is another attempt: Dawson and Jen sleep together and start a relationship – but here too, it quickly fails. This time, it is mainly because they are in completely different stages of their lives.
There have been countless relationships throughout the series. However, some of them were only short-lived or not really serious.
And then, of course, there are the relationships that are real but less common in fan fiction, such as the relationship between Gale and Mitch, or Bessie and Bodie...
